How much does a sleeve tattoo cost in NZ?
A full sleeve in New Zealand usually costs $3,000 to $9,000, and a half sleeve about $1,400 to $4,500. The total is the hours multiplied by the artist's rate: a full sleeve takes at least 20 hours and often 30 to 40, and NZ studios that publish an hourly rate charge $150 to $220.
Sleeve tattoo cost at a glance
| Piece | Typical hours | At $150/hr | At $220/hr | Sessions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Half sleeve, simple blackwork | About 10 hours | About $1,500 | About $2,200 | 2 to 3 |
| Half sleeve, black and grey or colour | 15 to 20 hours | $2,250 to $3,000 | $3,300 to $4,400 | 3 to 5 |
| Full sleeve, black and grey, small arm | At least 20 hours | From $3,000 | From $4,400 | 4 to 6 |
| Full sleeve, detailed or colour | 30 to 40 hours | $4,500 to $6,000 | $6,600 to $8,800 | 6 to 10 |
The hours come from Waihi Tattoo, which says a black and grey sleeve takes at least 20 hours on a small arm and could take twice that on a larger one, and from GetInked's 2026 Auckland guide, which puts a full sleeve at 15 to 40 hours. The two rates are the published hourly rates from The Wild Lotus ($150) and Sacred Tattoo ($220 for ongoing work). Your artist's rate may sit above or below both.
What is a good price for a sleeve tattoo?
For a full sleeve in NZ, $3,000 to $9,000 is the normal range: GetInked puts Auckland full sleeves at $2,800 to $9,000 and more. A quote well under $3,000 for a detailed full sleeve means either a very fast artist, a simple design, or hours that will grow once you start. A good price is one where the hourly rate and the estimated hours are both written down.
How much is a half sleeve tattoo in NZ?
Usually $1,400 to $4,500, according to GetInked's Auckland figures, for shoulder to elbow or elbow to wrist. At $150 to $220 an hour that is roughly 10 to 20 hours. Simple blackwork sits at the bottom of the range; realism, heavy shading or full colour at the top. A half sleeve is often the first stage of a full one, so plan the design with that in mind.
How many hours and sessions does a sleeve take?
A full sleeve takes 20 to 40 hours, split into sessions of three to six hours, or full days if you can sit that long. Most people need four to ten sessions, a few weeks apart so each part heals. Waihi Tattoo says that if you find it hard to sit still, or have a large arm, the hours can double, and fine, intricate detail adds more.

Is $10,000 too much for a tattoo sleeve?
For most NZ sleeves, yes, it is above the usual range. But it is not unreasonable for a senior artist: GetInked lists Auckland senior artists at $320 to $550 an hour, and 25 hours at $400 is $10,000. If the quote is that high, check it is for an artist whose portfolio shows sleeves in the style you want, and that the hours estimate is in writing.
How big is a $2,000 tattoo?
At $150 to $220 an hour, $2,000 buys about 9 to 13 hours of tattooing. That is a simple half sleeve, a large thigh or upper-arm piece, or the first two or three sessions of a full sleeve. In The Wild Lotus's published examples, a five-hour back piece came to about $750, so $2,000 is roughly two and a half of those.
How big is a $5,000 tattoo?
About 23 to 33 hours at $150 to $220 an hour. That covers most black and grey full sleeves, or a detailed half sleeve plus shoulder, or a large back piece at a cheaper rate. The Wild Lotus priced a 15-hour full back at about $2,250 at $150 an hour; the same hours at $220 come to about $3,300.
Worked example: a black and grey full sleeve
Say your artist estimates 24 hours, done as six four-hour sessions six weeks apart. At $150 an hour that is $3,600; at $220 it is $5,280. Sacred Tattoo takes a $220 deposit for up to half a day, so you would pay that when booking each session and it comes off the bill. Spread over six sessions in about seven to eight months, the $220-an-hour version costs about $880 a session.
Add a margin: if the hours run 25 per cent over the estimate, which is common on a first sleeve, the totals become about $4,500 and $6,600. Budget for the high number and treat anything under it as a saving.
Day rates and paying per session
Some studios offer a day rate for long sessions, which can work out cheaper per hour than booking short ones. Bohemian Tattoo Arts in Tauranga lists day rates, and Sacred Tattoo in Auckland takes a $550 deposit for a full day. You pay as you go, one session at a time, so a sleeve is usually budgeted over months rather than paid up front.

What pushes a sleeve price up or down
- Style. Realism and colour packing take longer per square centimetre than bold blackwork or traditional.
- Arm size. More skin is more hours; Waihi Tattoo says a large arm can double the time.
- Sitting. Breaks cost time. Being able to sit through long sessions keeps the total down.
- Covering old work. Building a sleeve around or over an existing tattoo adds design time and hours.
- The artist. A sought-after artist charges more an hour, but a fast, experienced one can still cost less overall.

How to get an accurate sleeve quote
Ask for three numbers in writing: the hourly or day rate, the estimated total hours, and the deposit per session. Send reference images, say whether you want a half or full sleeve, and photos of the arm including any existing tattoos. Waihi Tattoo notes that time estimates are not exact, so ask the artist how far over their sleeves usually run.
