Tattoo removal cost in New Zealand
How much does tattoo removal cost in NZ?
Laser tattoo removal in New Zealand is priced per session by size: roughly $75 to $140 for a small tattoo, $150 to $250 for a palm-sized one, and $190 to $350 or more for a hand-sized or larger piece, going by five clinics' published price lists in October 2026. Most tattoos need 6 to 12 sessions at least six weeks apart, so the total is usually $1,000 to $3,000 and the process takes a year or more.
Tattoo removal prices from five NZ clinics
These are the per-session prices each clinic publishes on its own website, read on 27 October 2026. Size names differ between clinics, so the table lines them up by rough size. Every clinic says the final price is set at a consultation, and prices change, so treat this as a map of the market rather than a quote.
| Clinic (location) | Small (to ~5cm) | Medium (~palm, to 10cm) | Large (~hand, to 15cm) | Bigger |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| New Leaf Skin & Beauty (Upper Hutt) | $99 to 2cm, $139 to 5cm | $209 | $279 | $349 to 20cm, then POA |
| Lasersmart (Auckland) | $75 at 2.5cm | $200 | $300 | Quoted |
| Pure Beauty Therapy (Palmerston North) | $75 stamp, $125 business card | $150 | $190 | From $199 |
| The Dunes Skin & Laser (Papamoa) | From $85 stamp, from $135 business card | From $185 | From $250 | Quoted |
| Remove Your Tattoo | $100 to $140 | $250 to $350+ (one band, 10 to 15cm) | Same band | Quoted |
New Leaf takes 15% off if you prepay six sessions and charges $65 for a consultation with a patch test. Lasersmart was advertising a free first session for new clients when we checked. Pure Beauty Therapy and The Dunes both offer a free consultation.
How many sessions does tattoo removal take?
Usually 6 to 12, and that number matters more than the session price. Lasersmart and Remove Your Tattoo both say most tattoos need 6 to 12 sessions. New Leaf says 1 to 6 for an amateur tattoo and 5 to 10 for a professional one, because professional work puts more ink in, deeper and more evenly. Black ink on older tattoos tends to clear fastest; some colours, and layered or cover-up work, take longer.
How long does tattoo removal take from start to finish?
Most of a year, often longer. New Leaf requires at least six weeks between treatments, Fade in Tauranga recommends at least six weeks, and Remove Your Tattoo recommends six to eight. The skin and your immune system need that time to clear the broken-up ink. Eight sessions with six-week gaps is seven gaps, or 42 weeks, before the last appointment, and the final result keeps settling for weeks after it.
A worked example
Say you want to remove a palm-sized professional tattoo on your forearm, and it takes eight sessions. At Pure Beauty Therapy's $150 medium price that is $1,200. At New Leaf's $209 it is $1,672, or about $1,424 if you prepay six at $178 and pay full price for the last two. At Remove Your Tattoo's upper medium price of $350 it is $2,800. Same tattoo, same number of sessions, more than double the cost depending on the clinic, which is why getting two or three quotes on the same photo is worth the time.
What pushes the price up or down
- Size. Every clinic prices by size band, so measure the tattoo in centimetres before you ask for a quote.
- Ink density. Professional work and heavily packed colour need more sessions than a thin amateur tattoo. New Leaf notes its prices can rise where ink concentration is higher.
- Colour. Black absorbs the laser best. Some colours respond slowly and add sessions.
- Placement. Areas further from the heart, like hands, ankles and feet, have slower circulation and often clear more slowly.
- Packages. Prepaying a block of sessions usually saves 10 to 15%, but only buy one once a patch test shows how your skin responds.
What is the cheapest way to remove a tattoo?
The cheapest real option is often not full removal. If you want something different rather than bare skin, a cover-up tattoo by a good artist can cost less than a year of laser sessions. Many cover-up artists ask for two or three fading sessions first, so the old design does not show through. Our guide to what a tattoo costs explains how artists price that work. Creams and DIY kits sold online that promise to remove a tattoo do not reach the ink deep in the skin, and acid-based products can scar.

Does tattoo removal hurt?
Yes, briefly. People usually compare it to a rubber band snapping against the skin, and a session on a small tattoo lasts minutes; Lasersmart says sessions run 15 to 45 minutes depending on size. Clinics often use cooling during treatment. Numbing cream is an option at some clinics, and our tattoo numbing cream guide covers which products are pharmacy-only in New Zealand and how long they last.
Before you book removal
- Ask what laser the clinic uses and who operates it, and whether it does a patch test first.
- Ask for a total estimate, not just the per-session price: number of sessions times price, plus any consultation fee.
- Follow the aftercare the clinic gives you. Treated skin blisters and scabs like a new tattoo, and the same rules apply: do not pick it, keep it out of the sun and out of pools until healed.
- If you are planning a new tattoo, the cheapest removal is the one you never need. Our guide to choosing a tattoo artist covers how to avoid it.
