Tattoo cover-ups: what can be covered, and what it takes
Can my tattoo be covered up?
Usually yes, if you accept two rules: the new tattoo has to be bigger than the old one, and it has to be darker where it sits over the old lines. A light or faded tattoo can often be covered in one go; a dense black one usually needs two or three laser fading sessions first, which in New Zealand clinics start from about $75 to $150 each.
Can tattoos be completely covered up?
Yes, in the sense that nobody looking at the finished piece should see the old one. That works because tattoo ink is translucent: dark ink hides lighter ink beneath it, but light ink never hides dark. So the cover-up design puts its darkest areas, heavy shading, solid black, deep colour, over the old lines, and uses the lighter parts of the design for the empty skin around it.
Cover-up straight away, fade first, or remove?
| Your old tattoo | Usual route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Thin lines, small, light or already faded | Cover-up in one go | Little ink to hide, so the new design has freedom |
| Bold black lettering or tribal | 2 to 3 laser fading sessions, then cover-up | Solid black only hides under more solid black unless it is faded first |
| Large, dense colour or a big piece | Fade first, or a blackwork cover | Covering it without fading means an even bigger, mostly dark design |
| You want bare skin, not a new tattoo | Full removal | A cover-up always adds ink; removal takes 6 to 12 sessions |
| Blown-out or scarred lines | Ask a cover-up specialist to look in person | Blur and raised skin change what can sit over it |
How much should a tattoo cover-up cost?
Expect a cover-up to cost more than a fresh tattoo of the same size, because it is bigger, takes more design time and is slower to tattoo. Artists price it the same way as any tattoo, by time or by piece, and most want to see the old tattoo before quoting. Our guide to what affects tattoo prices explains how that quote is built.
How artists set the number: what affects tattoo price in NZ
A worked example: fading first
Say you have a small black name on your wrist, about 5cm long, and you want a floral piece over it. A cover-up artist may ask for three laser sessions first. At the small-tattoo prices NZ clinics published in October 2026, $75 at Pure Beauty Therapy or $139 at New Leaf for up to 5cm, that is $225 to $417 for fading, spread over about four months because clinics want six weeks between sessions. Full removal of the same tattoo would usually take twice as many sessions or more.

What do I do if my tattoo is too dark to cover?
Fade it with a laser before you book the cover-up. Two or three sessions lighten black ink enough that an artist can work over it with far more choice of design, colour and size. Tell the clinic it is for a cover-up, not full removal, so you are not sold a twelve-session package you do not need. Wait until the skin has fully healed from the last session before tattooing.
What makes a good cover-up tattoo?
Designs with natural dark areas and organic shapes: florals with dark leaves, animals with fur or feathers, Japanese work with wind bars and waves, mandalas, and blackwork. Designs that struggle are fine line, light watercolour, minimalist script and anything with large areas of empty skin, because they have nowhere to hide the old ink. If you love fine line, fade first.

How to choose a cover-up artist
- Look for healed cover-up photos in their portfolio, with the before picture. Fresh photos hide a lot.
- Send a clear, well-lit photo of the old tattoo with a ruler next to it when you enquire.
- Expect the artist to suggest a bigger design or a change of placement. That is them being honest, not upselling.
- Ask whether they want you to fade first, and how many sessions. A good cover-up artist will say so up front.

Healing a cover-up
A cover-up heals like any new tattoo, but it is often larger and more heavily worked, so it can be more swollen and take a little longer to settle. Treat it gently, keep it out of the sun and out of the sea and pools until it has finished peeling.
